1839 explores the intersection of race, politics, the arts, community, and culture in Pittsburgh. In this space, writers and other artists in and from Pittsburgh connect, provoke, enlighten, and entertain.
We want your smart rants and subversive ideas. We want your passionate opinions and irreverent musings. We want your eloquent storytelling and fresh points of view.
We seek submissions in the following categories:
Profiles of Pittsburghers, those who are here and those who used to be here
Reviews of Pittsburgh events, books, music, places, performances
Long form features
Photos and photo essays
Blow our minds. We welcome submissions that don’t fit neatly into any of the above sections, but do reflect a clear and original perspective, showcase bad-ass writing, and are a good fit with regard to our overall themes.
We’re especially (though not exclusively) interested in submissions that illuminate something provocative, interesting, or unexpected about Pittsburgh’s past, present, or future, as it relates to race, arts, culture, and/or community.
Interested in submitting? Please send a query to firstname.lastname@example.org that includes your connection to Pittsburgh.
Unsolicited drafts will not be acknowledged.
